After less than six months of shopping around his startup’s new networking software, Andy Ory is convinced he’s onto something big.
In fact, Ory thinks the market opportunity for 128 Technology Inc. is “20 times the size” of the market served by Acme Packet, which Ory took public in 2006 and sold to Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) in 2013 for $2.1 billion.
“Because we’re getting just a great response…I think you’re going to see an industry develop out of it. Of course we want to be the dominant player,” Ory said, noting he doesn’t know of any other companies offering competing technology at the moment. “In five years I would like to see our technology and maybe even some competing technology at the edges of all of these networks.”
128 Technology last week went public with the name of its first customer, secure-communications provider Revation Systems of Minnesota. But Ory says the company has several other customers and about two-dozen potential customers running trials.
After a quiet founding in 2014, the Burlington-based startup announced itself in June of 2016 with the promise to “fix” the internet thanks to a new type of software-based network routing.
Ory says 25 years of increasing network complexity and the recent boom in data traffic brought on by smartphones and other connected devices provide the motivation for a new solution, but that only in the past three years have general purpose computers become powerful enough to support the kind of routing software 128 Technology is building.
128 Technology has raised $36 million to date, including from Boston-based G20 Ventures. It currently employs about 90 people. The company currently has six job openings in its 26,700-square-foot Burlington headquarters.
